Lunch BuddiesLunch Buddies – A Joplin School-Based Mentoring Program

Can you share 45 minutes each week with a student?

The Lunch Buddies program is an opportunity for local volunteers to become positive role models for at-risk Joplin students. Lunch Buddy volunteers can make a big impact on a student's life by spending a little time with them – about 45 minutes during the student's lunch hour once a week.

Lunch Buddies is a collaborative effort of Joplin Schools and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jasper and Newton Counties (BBBSJN).

Frequently Asked Questions

What do Lunch Buddies do?
Lunch Buddy volunteers go to a local elementary or middle school once a week to eat lunch and to spend recess with a designated student. Volunteers are there to be a positive role model, a friend, and a confidant to the student they are matched with. Ideally, volunteers will continue with the same student from year to year throughout the student's school career.

What are the requirements to become a Lunch Buddy?
Potential volunteers are asked to commit to the program for the entire school year. All volunteers undergo mandatory background screenings and an application process with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jasper and Newton Counties.

Can I volunteer even though the school year is half over?
YES! There are always more students who would benefit from participating in the Lunch Buddies program.
